What is a monolithic kernel?
Q. Hey guys, I was just wondering if someone could explain what a monolithic kernel is? I know what a microkernel and a resource kernel is but having difficulty understanding the difference. Thanks

A. A monolithic kernel is a kernel architecture where the entire operating system is run in kernel space as supervisor mode. In difference with other architectures (microkernel, hybrid kernels), the monolithic kernel defines alone a high-level virtual interface over computer hardware, with a set of primitives or system calls to implement all operating system services such as process management, concurrency, and memory management in one or more modules

The cuurent research activities and the challenges in the field of Operating Systems.?
Q. The field of operating systems is quite vast. There are various research activities which occured in the 1970-90 period which led to the developement of OS like UNIX and LINUX. But what is going on now.I know some of you would reply -microkernel. Is that all? Is there any research seriously going on? Or are we now behind some of the newer fields like mobile computing, or the ever in news topics like AI? I would also like to know whether they are attempts to correlate these fields like AI and OS,... What are the current challenges which researchers(if any there in this field) are looking for?
