computersDefinition from Wiktionary, the free dictionary Jump to: navigation, searchFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data//information, and provides output in a useful format. While a computer can, in theory, be made out of almost anything (see misconceptions section), and mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). Originally, they were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into mobile devices, and can be powered by a small battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". However, the embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are the most numerous. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to stop a computer on my home LAN from accessing internet but allow access to other computers on LAN? Q. I use Windows filesharing and would like to stop one computer on my LAN from accessing anything but other computers on my local network- I do not want it to be able to access the internet. Can anyone recommend how to do this? I would like this to be something configured in Windows itself since I do not want all partitions on the computer to be unable to access the internet. Just one of them. Asked by dave - Sat Jun 27 20:35:26 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. As previous answers have mentioned, you could configure a firewall rule in your router to block that computer from getting to the Internet. If your router doesn't have that functionality, you could configure that computer with bogus / fictitious DNS addresses. Of course, I would suggest using private IP addresses for this. You could log in the computer as administrator to make those changes, and then the person could have a plain user account, and even if they knew what was going on, they couldn't make changes since it's just a user account. That computer would still be able to see the Windows network, because Windows uses netBIOS for that. One piece I can not find reliable info on is what percent of computers recycled/donated are able to be refurbished and resold (within the US). The numbers I have found are <2%, 10% and 50%. Asked by the_real_miked - Sun Jan 11 22:43:26 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. i'd guess that 50% or more can be salvaged. however, it's extremely difficult to find an operating system that will run very well (ie not be slower than a nematode) on older, slower, machines. i would think that there should be a market for an operating system that has less function, and uses fewer cpu cycles. unfortunately, such a system may well not be profitable. a) because people will simply copy it and not pay, or b) because people will not find the lack of much of the current function acceptable. Answered by linlyons - Sun Jan 11 23:44:24 2009 How do I get my computers to share files?
Q. I have two computers connected in my house with a router, both wired, although they are wireless capable(no wireless cards, yet, just the router). How can I share files between the two computers? Can I use a web browser to browse through the HD of the other computer? Or am I going to have to do some sort of artificial server set-up? Asked by drezeder - Thu Feb 8 18:29:37 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. You have to run your set up a home or small office network wizard which is in your network connection window on the left side. You have to do this on both computers and make sure you give both computers the same work group name or they can't connect to each other. Then after you establish a connection between the to you just have to right click on the folders you want to share and go down to sharing and security and click on that and check share this folder, you can also check allow user you make changes so you can make changes to that folder from the opposite computer. Might sound complicated but it's not the wizard is easy to use and if you don't want to share a folder any more just go back through and uncheck share folder.
